Man’s words ought to be few; they are so often worthless.
Not so with God: By His Word the worlds were begun (Hebrews 11:3) and will be ended (2 Peter 3:5-7). The same Word that brought light into the world of nature brings light into the hearts of men (2 Corinthians 4:6).
God spoke through his holy prophets and finally by His very Son (Hebrews 1:1,2). He wanted men to have His Word, to know His will and walk His way.
Now, it has pleased God to set down His Word in writing — the Bible. “All Scripture is God-breathed,” II Timothy 3:16.
See how the Word of God explodes within the human heart. Here is a power like the tiny seed that lodges in the crevice of the wall. It cracks the stone wall and sends forth branches and fruit.
Too many Christians feel apologetic concerning the Scriptures. They try to explain the miracles and argue the validity and authority of the text. Stand back and let the Bible speak for itself! Do not fear for the lion, just loose him and let him go. Fear only for those in his way.
These words are divine! When men heard Jesus, they all “were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips.” His words had authority.’ And again, “All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are!” (Luke 4:22 32,36.) The very power and presence of God is in His Word. They are living words. You won’t be the same if you open your heart to them.
How awful is neglect of God’s Word!!
Read in Hebrews 2:1-3 where God warns against this. There is no escape for those who are too busy for the things “spoken by the Lord.”
If the Bible seems dry and difficult to you, perhaps you are not right with God. One who knows and loves Jesus Christ hears in Scripture the voice of his Beloved. The Son of God walks in its pages. Seek Him daily in Mark or John as a beginning place.
In conclusion, let me urge you to put earnest reading of the Scriptures first in your life. Put it before tasks or TV, before studies or hobbies.
Parents, give Bible reading a place in your home. Line upon line; here a little and there a little. If you stay at it every day you will see results.
Each individual Christian will experience daily refreshment and cleansing — a spiritual purging — from faithful regular reading. (See John 15:3).
Finally, attend Sunday School and all public services of the church. Your pastor strives for a balanced diet in preaching and presenting the Word of God: Sunday morning and evening and prayer meeting. “Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.” (Hebrews 10:25).
